During your first visit we will begin by asking a few simple questions to help us figure out how we can help you best. In some cases you just want to relax from a hectic week, in others you are searching for relief from aches and pains, in either case we will tailor our treatment to your individual needs. For more detailed information on what to expect if you are suffering from a specific or chronic issue click on our "pain and rehab" button and find your issue listed below, or even better give us a call and let us personally walk you through how we can make you feel better!
Your massage treatment will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music is often played to help you relax, and we have many different listening options so you get to choose what you enjoy most while you lie on our heated massage table especially designed for your comfort. If you are suffering from TMJ or jaw pain most of the work is done in a comfortable padded chair next to our warm fireplace.
Depending on your needs most work at our clinic is done fully clothed in shorts and a short sleeve shirt. This allows us not only to get quicker and more effective results making you feel more pain free and better relaxed when you leave, but it also makes many people feel safer and more comfortable.
Make yourself comfortable. If I need to adjust your position, or need you to try a specific movement to determine which muscles are causing your discomfort I will either move you or will ask you to move what is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It's up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.
It usually depends on the techniques used. In more general massage work the techniques are designed to help you relax more deeply in some cases clients even fall asleep. In more specific work where you are looking for pain relief the techniques still feel amazing as we target the specific muscles that are causing you discomfort, many clients refer to this as "hurts so good." In either case we will check in with you regularly to make sure that the pressure in comfortable and that we are focusing on the areas that will make you feel wonderful.
The crème that I use is hypoallergenic and I have even people with very sensitive skin don't complain of any reaction. With that said, most of the techniques can be adapted so that you can get the same results even without the need for crèmes or lotions.
No, there are several medical conditions that would make massage inappropriate. That's why it is necessary that you fill out the health history forms before you begin your session. Since I specialize in treating chronic pain I am highly educated on various tests that we can use to determine if massage is appropriate for your specific condition. In some cases I may want to work closely with your doctor to get you the best results possible.
I offer 60 minute and 30 minute massage treatments. Most people prefer 60 minute sessions so that we have time to figure out the root of your problem and work towards solving it so you feel relief when you walk out the door. Additionally because we believe that your experience is more than just the time on the table we schedule a few minutes at the end of every session to answer your questions and help you figure out the best course of action to get you the results that you are looking for.
Most people feel wonderful when they leave the clinic. If you are suffering from chronic pain there is often a sense of physical and even emotional relief as we help you find hope in getting back to the activities you love. While not all long term pain can be changed in a 60 minute session most people even with chronic issues experience better mobility, a sense of better balance and stability, and a decrease in their daily pain. Many people whether they be in pain or not find that they sleep better the night after a massage and that they are better able to manage their stress in the upcoming week.
One of the things that is so fascinating about nerve pain such as sciatica is that current research suggests that it is not actually the pressure on the nerve that is the common cause of pain, but rather the chemical inflammation caused by the pressure. What does this mean for you? It means that if we reduce the amount of irritation to the area we can often achieve significant relief from symptoms even if there is an underlying problem.
Recent studies actually suggest that a large portion of the population has bulging or herniated discs without any pain! Other studies conducted by Robin McKenzie suggest that repeated movement in the opposite direction may actually move the disc back to its' original position! Call today to find out how quickly you can get back to the activities you love.
Studies conducted by Shirley Sahrmann suggest that pain comes from poor movement patterns such as repeatedly bending forward with the low back rather than with the hips. We have experienced at our office that even in advanced age if we change how we move so that we stop irritating the problem then the symptoms can improve significantly in just a short time. Imagine very gently tapping your toe with a hammer for an hour everyday; overtime your toe is going to become very sensitive to even the smallest movement. At precision manual therapy we focus on "taking away the hammer" to allow the area to rest and heal.
While it is ideal to get quality care as soon as possible after an injury we have found that many of our clients find significant relief even after having suffered 10 or even 20 years!
Recent studies suggest that physical changes such as these may be caused by poor movement patterns such repeatedly bending forward with your spine rather than your hips. While precision manual therapy cannot reverse these physical changes we frequently find that when we correct the movement patterns the pain associated with them can be significantly reduced.
